Northern Contemporary

Artists' Guild

We are a small group of Artists dedicated to capturing and bringing forth the beauty of the Northern Landscape. In our paintings we strive to reflect the essence of the North on canvas in traditional, painterly and abstract ways.  Our goal is to resurrect and re-awaken an appreciation for fine arts, not just for a moment but for a lifetime and also future generations.

William N. Currie

I have been sketching and drawing most of my life but I only seriously took up painting in the early 1980’s.  I was fortunate to have studied with many fine artists in Thunder Bay, Barrie, St. Catharines and Niagara On The Lake. Each artist imparted their own technique and influence on me teaching me to really see and to always paint something that has passed through my heart.  However, the greatest impetus to create artistic impression on canvas was the impact of viewing Renoir’s “The Luncheon Of The Boating Party” in Buffalo and the work of the Group Of Seven.

The Study of fine art is a lifelong pursuit, constantly changing and evolving with the times.  In my paintings I try to engage and invite the viewer into the painting.  This allows them to participate, sharing with me visions of the places I have visited, pictures I have imagined and feelings I have felt.  My goal is that of a contemporary impressionist.  To quote Emile A. Gruppe whose paintings I love, “Loose spontaneous work is full of accident and inspiration and cannot be duplicated.”

Canada is a vast and magnificent land diverse in its entirety from coast to coast.  I’m inspired by the four seasons and the way the land engages me with its ever changing beauty.  It is my desire to continue to express my feelings for this splendor on canvas.  However, these feelings may be translated from traditional art to more contemporary abstract landscapes or abstract expressionism.  If you enjoy my work then I have achieved my goal.

April Lynne Lindsey

April Lynne Lindsey I was born and raised in Thunder Bay. I have always been interested in art so I decided to take an oil painting course at night school. That was the beginning of a hobby which allowed me to express my creativity and turned into a passion. The results have been hours of pure pleasure and relaxation but most of all I found so many new friends with a common interest. I have been teaching Art for the past 15 years, offering classes in both oil and acrylic painting.  I am currently teaching classes at 55 Plus, and West Arthur Community Centres.

I create Landscapes, Still Life and Street Scenes and I roam around the city for my subject matter searching for my inspiration in out of the way places.

Glen Morrison

I was raised in Thunder Bay, where I received my education at both the college and university specializing in fine arts.

I have always been in interested in art but did not start focusing on it until high school.  My interests got me to take many special courses and study different techniques . Through the years, I have also learned a from other artists that I have been involved with in various local art groups.

My three children and five grandchildren have been a great inspiration  to my art. Not only by posing for drawing but also by providing me with great pictures of north western Ontario. I am sure that living in an area like this, I will never run out of settings for subjects for my passion of art.
